Early Start Family Resource & Family Empowerment Centers

Early Start Family Resource Center - Special Needs Connection – For families with children ages 0-3

It can be very challenging when a parent of a newborn or a young child learns that his/her child has, or may be at risk of having, a developmental delay.  The Special Needs Connection provides emotional support, parent-to-parent networking, information and education, as well as activities to support families in this situation. The Special Needs Connection is an Early Start Resource Center which also has a wealth of materials for parents of young (age 0-3) children with special needs.

Family Empowerment Center – For families with children ages 3-22

The Changing Tides Family Services (CTFS) Family Empowerment Center for Disabilities (FEC) is funded by the California State Department of Education, Special Education Division, in partnership with the Seeds of Partnership Project. Our FEC serves all of Humboldt County working in collaboration with individuals, parents, family members, caregivers, and professionals in the community, committed to elevating the lived experience of parent-experts in shared decision-making. Our FEC builds on the strengths of the existing CTFS Early Start Family Resource Center and prioritizes parents of children or youth with disabilities as staff.

Our core services include on-site and remote support through our FEC Navigators; training for parents and caregivers focusing on all aspects of the IEP process, special education, and responsive transition planning. Our FEC is committed to building and maintaining positive, collaborative relationships across multiple community service providers while supporting parents, families, and caregivers.
